Minneapolis, February 23, 2006Minnesota Monthly magazine’s art director, Brian Johnson, has been awarded a Silver Medal for excellence in design in the prestigious annual competition conducted by the Society of Publication Designers. The winning entry was the opening spread for the Minnesota Monthly feature “Game Show,” which appeared in the November 2005 issue.

“Every month, Brian Johnson brings a world-class design sensibility to the pages of Minnesota Monthly. To see his work honored in a forum that is usually dominated by such books as the New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Martha Stewart Living, Entertainment Weekly, and GQ is extremely gratifying—but to those of us who work with him on a daily basis, hardly surprising,” says editor Jeff Johnson. “He’s that good.”

In its 41st Annual Magazine Design Competition, the Society of Publication Designers awarded 24 Gold Medals, 24 Silver Medals and 632 Merit Awards to publications across the country. The competition included nearly 8,000 entries in over 75 categories, judged by a panel of 70 editorial design judges.

Minnesota Monthly also received four merit awards for:

  • Spread Design: “Generation XXXL,” January 2005
  • Story Design: “Pie in the Sky,” November 2005
  • Photography: “Talk to the Animals,” December 2005 (photographer Michael Crouser)
  • Illustration: “Exaltation,” March 2005 (illustrator Brad Holland)
